Mongolia is a vast country but half of its population lives in the capital Ulaan Baatar. Unemployment rates are high and are increasing, while winters are extremely tough.
Migration from Mongolia to other countries therefore becomes very popular, which sometimes provokes effects such as human trafficking, abuse and exploitation of migrants. In Belgium, a lot of Mongolian migrants live in the city of Antwerp without legal documents. As the community is large, the voluntary return to Mongolia is happening and many have been helped already by Caritas.

Caritas Mongolia was founded in 2001 and has a vital role to play in a country where many livelihoods are blighted by the harsh climate.
Caritas Mongolia was founded as a result of a dzuud in 1999-2000 that directly affected 450,000 herders (a fifth of the total population) and killed about 3 million animals. For the first time in living memory the country was struck by a dzuud the following year, before pastures could regenerate. Many herders, their livestock destroyed, moved to urban areas where they face a struggle to find work and shelter.
In 2007 Caritas Mongolia became a structural partner of Caritas International Belgium, given the increasing number of volontary returns from Belgium to Mongolia. Caritas Mongolia has been a member of the ERSO project from 2007 to 2009, as a partner of Caritas Belgium.
Father Pierrot Kasemuana and Mrs Nasanjargal Jamaa, as well as the social service of Caritas Mongolia, have worked with Caritas International Belgium in Ulaan-Baatar since 2007
Since 2007, more than 80 persons were assisted by the reintegration program in Mongolia. The assistance mainly consisted in training, health care, and income generating activities.

In August 2009, Thomas Jézéquel and Annelieke Carlier from the Cell Volontary Return and Reintegration visited our local partner Caritas Mongolia.
